Anita Marques Andrade, Innovation and Technology coordinator at Anglo American, says that the company decided to participate in the M-Spot Cycle 3 after getting excellent strategies from the startups that signed up for the M-Start cycles. “Our Sustainable Mining Plan offers very challenging goals, so through this open innovation ecosystem we will seek solutions to our specific problems and share with the entire industry on the Demoday,” says Anita. Demoday is the closing event of the program, when startups will reveal the results of the Proofs of Concept.

IndustryCare was one of the startups that participated in M-Start with Anglo American. For Wagner de Barros Neto, co-founder and Head of Product at IndustryCare, the experience was transformative. “Frequent interactions with the Anglo American team helped us to better understand the mining company's needs, enabling us to build a more relevant solution for the sector,” he says. He also highlights it as an opportunity to exchange with other startups, to evaluate partnerships and to provide visibility for the proposed solution, with chances of attracting new and potential customers.

According to Leandro Rossi, Mining Hub’s executive director, the program is supported by three pillars: connection, transformation and innovation. “We have great expectations to establish a relationship of exchange and learning, through good challenges. After all, through the program, we are going to develop and offer solutions for a company like Anglo American, which is of global importance”.

M-Spot Cycle 3 Challenges

There will be six launched challenges classified into three strategic guidelines: Operational Excellence (3 challenges), Environmental sustainability (2 challenges) and (1 challenge). Check them out:

Operational Excellence

1: How can we make predictive mining asset inspection more dynamic, effective and autonomous?

2: How to reduce contaminants in the water that circulates in the beneficiation process?

3: How to develop an intelligent system for viewing, identifying trends and predicting variables in Anglo American's production process?

Environmental sustainability

4: How can we decarbonize the calcination process in nickel ore beneficiation?

5: How can we zero the disposal of waste to landfills?

Safety 

6: How can we improve the condition monitoring of valves and dampeners through the operational variables of the main pumps of the ore pipeline?

M-Spot Cycle 3 program characteristics 

Immersion stage: After going through the initial stages of selection, the finalist startups will go through the Immersion, a stage when they will detail the proposals exposed in the previous stages. The result of this work will be the input for the selection of a startup that presents the best solution for the Implementation of the Proof of Concept test (POC). Candidates will have direct access to mining company Anglo American and the program management team to understand the challenge, build and validate their proposal.

Implementation: Each challenge will have a startup selected to the Proof of Concept during a period of 3.5 months in which the startup will implement the POC at Anglo American, according to the work proposal defined in the immersion.

Demoday: Event that celebrates the end of the program cycle, in which startups present the results of the POCs.
